cuccidati

Ingredients

Filling-

  • 3 rings of figs
  • pitted dates
  • 1 box of white and dark raisins
  • 1 container of candied fruit
  • 1 jar of orange marmalade
  • 1 Hershey chocolate bar
  • roasted almonds and pine nuts
  • roasted grated orange peel
Dough-

  • 5 lbs of velvet flour
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 5 cups of Crisco
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 Tbsp. baking ammonia
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Filling-

Grind figs, raisins, candied fruit, dates, and orange marmalade together. Next, mix in the chocolate, that you have cut into pieces. Roasted orange peel, almonds, and pine nuts are added next. Add hot boiled sugar water and honey to the fig mixture, if dry. You want the mixture pliable.

Dough-

Mix all the ingredients, with simple syrup about 1/2 cup or less, until dough is nice and smooth. Let the dough rest for about half an hour. Roll a piece of dough out into a rectangular shape. The dough will be a little sticky, so sprinkle your counter with flour. Spoon the filling down in the center of the rectangle. Roll the dough into a log, with the seam side facing down. Flatten the top a bit. Cut your cookie on an angle and slit top. Make sure when you are cutting the cookie that the knife is kept clean.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
